Bring the Bible to Life

Dressing as a Biblical character is a classic for a reason. It’s a walking, talking (or candy-collecting!) story from God’s Word. Here are a few Biblical character ideas:

  • David & Goliath: A perfect dad-son or sibling duo costume!
    • David: A simple tunic (a brown shirt and pants), a sling (a piece of leather or cloth), and a pouch with five smooth stones from the garden.
    • Goliath: Get silly with it! Wear oversized clothes stuffed with pillows, a funny helmet, and carry a giant cardboard sword. It’s a lesson that with God on your side, no giant is too big.
  • Queen Esther: A flowing gown and a homemade crown. Carry a small scroll that says, “For Such a Time as This.” (Esther 4:14).
  • Noah: This one is so much fun! Wear a long robe and a beard (if you want!). Carry a small toy boat or a box decorated like the ark, filled with pairs of stuffed animals. It’s a walking, talking reminder of God’s promise. This is a fun one for a group!
  • Ruth & Naomi: A beautiful costume pair that speaks about loyalty and love. Simple, long dresses and shawls are key. Ruth can carry a basket of wheat, reminding us how she collected wheat from Boaz’s fields.
  • Daniel in the Lions’ Den: A great choice for showing courage and faith. A simple tunic and a belt. Carry a stuffed lion or two! It’s a visual way to share that God protects us, even in scary situations. Let friends join in with lion costumes!
  • A Disciple/Fisherman: A classic and easy one. A tunic, a sash, and sandals. Carry a fishing net (made from a mesh laundry bag!) and some plastic fish. You could be Peter, James, John, or any of the friends who Jesus called to be “fishers of men.”
  • Moses: The ultimate leader and law-bringer! Start with a long robe (a brown or blue bedsheet or tablecloth, safety-pinned at the shoulders works perfectly!). Add a staff or walking stick – find one in the backyard or use a cardboard tube. The key prop? Carry two “stone tablets.” Cut them from a cardboard box, paint them gray, and use a marker to write Roman numerals I through X for the Ten Commandments.
  • Angels: You really can’t go wrong with a beautiful angel costume! And it doesn’t need to be complicated. A long white dress (or draped sheet) with cardboard rings and tinsel halo.
  • The Good Shepherd: Another great idea for a father-son duo! A classic shepherd costume becomes powerful when a parent carries a young child (dressed as a lamb) on their shoulders. It’s a living picture of Jesus’s love for us. (Luke 15:3-7)

Symbols of Faith

These costumes focus on powerful Christian symbols that are easy to DIY and are meaningful and fun.

  • Walking in the Light: Wear dark clothing and use glow-in-the-dark paint to draw crosses, stars, and the word “LIGHT” on them. Carry a bright lantern or flashlight. (Matthew 5:14-16)
  • Child of God: A really quick and comfortable option. A simple t-shirt or sweatsuit that says “Child of God” is perfect. Add a golden pipe-cleaner halo for extra effect.
  • The Armor of God: An awesome DIY idea for kids of all ages (and their parents!) Create each piece from cardboard and foil:
    • Belt of Truth
    • Breastplate of Righteousness
    • Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
    • Shield of Faith
    • Helmet of Salvation
    • Sword of the Spirit (the Word!)

God’s Creatures

God’s amazing animal kingdom is proof of His awesome power and creativity, and dressing up as one of His creatures is a wonderful way to celebrate His creation.

  • The Lion: The lion is a powerful symbol of Jesus Himself (Revelation 5:5). A fuzzy onesie or a golden-brown outfit with a magnificent mane (made from yarn or faux fur) makes for a majestic costume. It’s a reminder of strength, courage, and the ultimate King.
  • A Tiger: With their bright orange and black stripes, tigers are a stunning example of God’s artistic flair. They represent strength, confidence, and living without fear.
  • An Elephant: Elephants are known for their wisdom, strong family bonds, and incredible memory. A gray sweatsuit, a sock stuffed for a trunk, and some big paper ears create an adorable and meaningful costume. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the gift of family and community.
  • An Eagle: Is your child always climbing and dreaming of flying? An eagle costume is perfect! Wear brown and white, and create magnificent wings from cardboard or felt. This costume ties into the beautiful promise in Isaiah 40:31 – that God renews our strength and helps us soar like eagles.
  • A Starfish: A simple, comfy costume. A great chance to reference the stars in the sky and the sea!
  • Jonah’s Whale: A creative DIY costume made from a gray hoodie and sweatpants. Add a fin on the back and a big felt mouth on the front. The story of Jonah is a powerful lesson in obedience and God’s mercy.
  • A Ladybug: A cute, classic costume that celebrates even the tiniest of God’s creatures. Its bright colors are a sign of joy and delight.
  • A Bumblebee: Buzzing with energy! Bees are essential to creation, pollinating plants and helping things grow. They represent diligence and community.
  • A Butterfly: Perhaps one of the best symbols of transformation and new life in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). The metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly is a beautiful picture of the resurrection.

Unique and Different Ideas

Some of the best costume ideas take something familiar and flip it on its head with a message of faith.

  • The “Treasures in Heaven” Pirates: Using Matthew 6:20-21 as a reference, you could dress up in classic pirate gear – eye patch, bandana, striped shirt. Include a route to heaven map as a special touch. This is an awesome Trunk Or Treat idea!
  • The “Light in the Darkness” Ninjas: John 1:5 is the inspiration for this costume. Instead of hiding in the darkness, these “light ninjas” can use glow sticks tucked into belts and armbands, allowing them to pierce through the darkness. Hand out glow bracelets with the candy.
  • The “Living Water” Scuba Divers/Swimmers: John 4:10 and John 7:38 talk about living water, so why not create a scuba divers costume that includes swimming goggles, a snorkel, flippers, and other fun swimming accessories? Carry a bottle of water labeled “Living Water”.
  • The “Fishers of Men” Anglers: A fisherman’s costume with vest, bucket hat, and fishing rod, all used to “catch” people for God’s kingdom. The hook could be replaced with a cross, and the tackle box could be used to collect or hand out candy.

Everyday Heroes

Celebrate the professions that point to Christ-like service, sacrifice, and love for our neighbors and communities. These costumes are a powerful testament to the holy in the humble and the sacred in the everyday.

  • Doctor/Nurse: Symbols of healing, compassion, and care.
  • Farmer: Represents stewardship of the land and trusting in God’s faithful provision.
  • Construction Worker: A reminder that we are called to be wise builders of our homes, our communities, and our faith.
  • Teacher: A reflection of patience and wisdom, just like Jesus, who taught the crowds and His disciples.
  • Firefighter: Courage, strength, self-sacrifice, and running toward danger to help others – a powerful image of Christ laying down His life for us.
  • Chef/Baker: A symbol of hospitality and using your gifts to bring joy to others.

Group & Family Theme Costumes

Coordinate your family or friends and multiply the fun!

  • Fruits of the Spirit: Perfect for a bigger family or church group. Assign each person a “fruit” (Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, etc.). Wear a solid color t-shirt with the word on it and hold a corresponding prop (a heart, a happy face sun, a dove, a clock, etc.). (Galatians 5:22-23)
  • Noah’s Ark: Go as pairs! Parents can be Noah and Mrs. Noah, while the kids can be pairs of animals. This is fun, playful, and instantly recognizable as a Bible story.
  • Garden of Eden:
    • Adam and Eve: Simple, modest outfits made from faux-fur or fabric. Key props could be a (plastic) apple and a friendly stuffed animal snake (focusing on the “before the fall” innocence).
    • The Animals of Eden: Kids can dress as any animal, emphasizing that in the beginning, everything was “very good” (Genesis 1:31).
