Trusting Jehovah Jireh: The Story of Abraham and Provision (Genesis 22:13-14)

When you can’t see a way, God is already working

How do you respond when God asks you to trust Him in a way that feels impossible? Abraham knew that feeling very well!

Genesis 22 drops us right into the middle of one of the most faith-stretching moments in all of Scripture. Abraham had finally become a father in his old age after decades of waiting, longing, and disappointment. But then, God asks him to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac – the very child through who all God’s promises were to come.

Think about this from Abraham’s point of view. He’d already experienced the heartbreak of waiting and the times when it seemed like maybe God had forgotten about him. Yet, God had come through. Now, in probably the most difficult moment of his life, with the greatest test before him, Abraham climbs Mount Moriah, still trusting that God would provide, even if he doesn’t see how.

The Scripture

“Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, ‘On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.’”
Genesis 22:13–14 (NIV)

Breaking Down the Verse

“Abraham looked up…”
Notice the timing in this verse… it was only after Abraham had gone all the way in obedience that he saw the provision God had prepared for him. So much of faith is about the simple act of “looking up,” even when the road is hard.

“…and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns.”
God’s answer appeared in the thicket – a surprise, a provision Abraham never could’ve arranged on his own. The provision was specific, timely, and exactly what was needed to substitute for Isaac.

“…sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.”
God’s intervention wasn’t just about meeting Abraham’s need, but about showing that God makes a way, sometimes in the very last moment. This story points toward Jesus, the ultimate Substitute given for us.

“So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide…”
This is where we get the name Jehovah Jireh, “The Lord Who Provides”. Abraham marked the moment, remembering and giving a name to the character of God.

“…On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”
God’s reputation for provision is meant to be remembered, reminding us that God’s answers often show up as we trust and obey, whether or not we see them in advance.

Faith in Action: What Does Trusting “The Lord Will Provide” Look Like?

Step Out In Faith, Even When It Doesn’t Make Sense
There are moments when following God feels very costly or confusing. Like Abraham, keep walking because you may not see the ram until you’re already on the mountain.

Look Up and Notice God’s Surprising Provisions
Pay attention to where God might be providing “in the thicket”. He’ll sometimes do this in unexpected people, changed plans, a last-minute opportunity, or a word of hope. Provision often isn’t where we expect, but it’s there.

Name the Moments
When you see God’s provision, big or small, name them – write them down, celebrate, share your story with someone. Like Abraham, remembering God’s goodness encourages faith for the next test.

Surrender Your “Isaac”
Ask yourself: What are you holding on to most tightly? What’s hardest to trust God with? Is it your family, job, future, finances, or health? Invite God into that place, and trust Him to provide as only He can.

Let God’s Provision Point You to Jesus
Every time God meets a need, it’s a small echo of the greatest gift He’s given us: Jesus, our ultimate Substitute, Provider, and Redeemer.

The Lord is my Provider. Even when I don’t see a way, I choose to trust that God is already at work preparing just what I need, at just the right time.

Closing Prayer

Faithful God,
Thank You that You see me and know my needs so much better than I do. Like Abraham, teach me to trust You even when I can’t see how things will work out. Help me to surrender every “Isaac” to You – every hope, every plan, every fear. Open my eyes to Your surprising provisions, whether big or small. Remind me to look up and recognize Your care all around me, even in the ordinary or unexpected places. And help me never forget that Your greatest provision was Jesus, given for me. May I walk in faith, gratitude, and joy because You, Jehovah Jireh, always provide.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
