DAILY BREAD
Scripture
Give us this day our daily bread.
MATTHEW 6:11

Historical Context
Jesus taught this prayer to His disciples in a time and culture where most ordinary people lived day-to-day, never sure where their next meal would come from. Unlike the wealthy, who had storehouses full of grain, ordinary people depended on daily wages to buy daily food. When Jesus said to pray for “daily bread,” He was acknowledging this reality while teaching them to trust God one day at a time rather than worrying about tomorrow’s needs or trying to hoard resources out of fear.

Application
God cares about your practical, everyday needs – not just the big spiritual stuff, but the real-life concerns like paying bills, having enough food, and meeting your family’s basic needs. When Jesus taught us to pray for daily bread, He was inviting us into a beautiful rhythm of dependence and trust. Instead of lying awake worrying about next month’s expenses or trying to control every outcome, we can bring today’s needs to our loving Father who promises to provide what we truly need, when we need it.
Reflection
- What daily needs cause you the most stress or worry? How could bringing these specific concerns and fears to God in prayer change your anxiety levels and sleep quality?
- When you think about asking God for “daily bread,” what holds you back – feeling like your needs are too small, too big, or too selfish to bother Him with?
- If you truly trusted that God would provide what you need for today, how would that change the way you spend your time, energy, and emotional focus – especially when worry about tomorrow tries to creep in?

Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that You care about every detail of my life, including my most basic daily needs. Help me to trust You one day at a time instead of overwhelming myself with worry about the future. When I’m tempted to stress about tomorrow’s challenges, remind me to focus on today’s blessings and bring my real needs to You in prayer. Give me the wisdom to be grateful for what I have while trusting You completely for what I need.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
