Why Fair Wages Matter to God.
What does it mean to “do the right thing” in your everyday work and business? Is it just following rules, or is there something deeper? The Bible is clear – God cares deeply about ethical, fair, and kind treatment of others, especially in how we handle money, business, and agreements. This isn’t just for big companies or famous leaders, it’s for every one of us, whether you’re working for a boss, running a business, serving customers, or even taking care of family.
From ancient Israel’s busy marketplaces to today’s offices and online shops, God’s instructions haven’t changed: treat people honestly, pay fairly, and choose right even when it costs you something. In Leviticus, God gave His people practical, everyday laws about money and fairness. And then Jesus summed up ethical living with one simple, golden rule: “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” God’s way of doing business always involves kindness and justice.
The Scriptures
“Do not defraud or rob your neighbor. Do not hold back the wages of a hired worker overnight.”
Leviticus 19:13 (NIV)
“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 7:12 (NIV)

Break Down of the Verses
Leviticus 19:13
This scripture was given to God’s people as part of His instructions for daily life. In ancient Israel, many workers depended on daily wages just to buy food for their families. Holding back someone’s hard-earned pay, even for a day, could mean empty plates at dinnertime. God’s heart is clear: cheating people out of what’s rightfully theirs is wrong. Justice and kindness matter in business and work.
Matthew 7:12
Jesus takes all those ancient laws and sums them up with a golden rule. If you wouldn’t want to be cheated, shortchanged, or ignored in your own work, don’t do it to anyone else. It’s a standard for every relationship, every deal, every interaction – simple to understand, but powerful to live by. Whether it’s wages, time, or respect, give what you’d hope to receive.
Remember that ethics and fairness are the heartbeat of God’s kingdom, showing love through everyday actions.
Faith in Action
How can you put these verses to work in your life, job, family, or community?
- Pay Fairly and Quickly: If you’re responsible for someone’s wages, pay promptly and generously.
- Be Honest in Deals or Promises: Don’t exaggerate, lie, or hide the truth to benefit yourself.
- Respect Other People’s Time and Effort: Don’t ask for “favors” you wouldn’t want asked of you.
- Make Contracts and Agreements Clear: Don’t use fine print or tricks – be straightforward and transparent.
- Practice the Golden Rule Daily: Pause and ask, “Would I want to be treated this way?” before acting.
- Speak Up When You See Injustice: If someone is being shortchanged, have the courage to defend what’s right.
God loves people who choose what’s right, even when it’s inconvenient or costly. Fairness and kindness build trust, respect, and lasting peace at work and beyond!
