Discover the comfort and confidence found in trusting God as your Shepherd and Provider.
Psalm 23 is probably the best-known and most loved of all the Psalms. It was written by King David, the former shepherd boy who became Israel’s greatest king!
In ancient Israel, sheep were 100% dependent on their shepherd for everything – he fed them, cared for them, defended them from wild animals, searched for them when they were lost, and tended to them if they were wounded. As a shepherd himself, David understood this well.
In Psalm 23, David paints a picture of God as a shepherd based on his personal experience. God isn’t a distant ruler, but He is like a shepherd that is close, caring about every detail of our lives. He watches over, guides, and provides for those who trust in Him
The Scripture
“The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing.”
Psalm 23:1

Breakdown of Psalm 23:1
Let’s dig into the beautiful simplicity of this verse:
“The Lord is my shepherd…”
David isn’t describing just any old shepherd – he’s claiming God as his shepherd. The same God who created the universe yet knows your name, your path, and everything you need – just like a good shepherd knows every sheep.
“…I lack nothing.”
Other translations say “I shall not want.” David faced many threats during his life so he understood having real and desperate needs, yet he still said he lacked nothing – what truly matters will always be provided, and having a good Shepherd is having enough.
Faith in Action: Practical Application
- Shift Your Focus
When you start to feel you “don’t have enough,” pause and turn your thoughts to God, your Shepherd. Make a list of what you do have: breath, salvation, relationship, daily provision. - Let God Lead
Sheep don’t map their own routes; they follow. Ask God each morning: “Shepherd, where do You want to guide me today?” - Rest in God’s Presence
The sheep’s peace depends on the nearness of the shepherd, not the absence of threats. Sit down quietly and invite God to sit with you, even when worries crowd in. - Release “Not Enough” Thinking
When comparison or scarcity sneaks in, say aloud: “The Lord is my shepherd; I have everything I need today.”
Reflection Questions
- What are you most prone to feel “not enough” about – money, relationships, abilities?
- How do you experience God as Shepherd in your life right now? What could that look like if you invited Him to lead more intentionally?
- When have you seen God provide for you in surprising or gentle ways, even when you were unsure of the outcome?
- What does “lacking nothing” mean to you?
- Do you think God defines “enough” differently than the world does?
- How does knowing you’re led by a Shepherd who knows your name shape your response to fear and anxiety?
- Where do you need to let go of self-sufficiency and let God care for your needs?
- If you truly believed you “lack nothing” today, what would you do differently?
Affirmation
Today, I have everything I truly need.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father
Thank You for knowing and loving me so personally. Forgive me when I chase after things that promise security but leave me empty. Teach me to trust Your care and to rest in Your presence. Remind me that with You, I lack nothing, that You have promised to provide for every true need, even in seasons of scarcity or uncertainty. Lead me in paths of trust and gratitude, both today and every day.
In Jesus’s name, amen.
