The Book of Lamentations contains five poetic laments (passionate expressions of grief, sorrow, or regret) written in the aftermath of Jerusalem’s destruction by Babylon in 586 BCE. Though traditionally attributed to the prophet Jeremiah, these powerful poems express the raw grief and confusion of God’s people as they witness the unthinkable – their holy city in ruins, the Temple destroyed, and many people carried into exile.
