Holding On Through the Unknown.
There’s something incredibly hard about walking through a struggle you can’t fix. The ones that linger for longer than you thought. The ones without a clear timeline or guaranteed ending. Whether it’s illness, grief, addiction, loss, or the slow, silent kind of pain no one else sees that wears you down little by little.
Maybe you’ve prayed for healing. Maybe you’ve done everything right.
Maybe you’ve begged God to show up – and still, the situation hasn’t changed.
That’s where Paul was.
In 2 Corinthians 12, he talks about a “thorn in the flesh.” We don’t know exactly what it was – some believe it was a physical issue, others think it was emotional or spiritual, but scripture doesn’t tell us. But we do know this: Paul pleaded with God to take it away. Not once. Not twice. Three times. And still, the answer was not what he expected.
God didn’t say, “Yes, I’ll fix it.”
He said, “My grace is sufficient.”
Sometimes, we experience miraculous healing. Sometimes, we find the strength to endure. But in either case, God doesn’t leave us empty-handed. He gives us His grace – enough for this moment. Enough for today.
This scripture teaches us that you don’t need to have all the answers. You don’t need to know how it all ends. You just need to know that you are not alone, and God’s power is holding you, even in weakness.
And maybe that’s where true strength really begins.
2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”

Scripture Breakdown – 2 Corinthians 12:9
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you…’”
This wasn’t some type of spiritual cliché or an answer Paul thought up to make himself feel better. This was God’s direct response to Paul’s pain. When the thorn didn’t go away, grace stepped in to carry him.
“…for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
We often think strength means having it all together. But God says, “Your weakest moment is where My strength shines the brightest.” His power isn’t limited by our pain – it’s revealed through it.
“Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses…”
Paul’s response seems almost crazy! Instead of resenting his weakness, he embraces it because it’s the place where God shows up in undeniable ways.
“…so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
There’s something sacred about surrender. When we stop pretending to be strong, we make room for real strength – the strength of God.
Faith in Action – Living with Grace When Waiting On Healing
- Acknowledge where you feel weak.
Don’t sugarcoat it. Write it down in your journal. Speak it in prayer. Weakness is not failure, it’s an invitation for God to show up. - Start your day with this prayer:
“God, give me the grace I need for today. Just today.” You don’t have to figure out tomorrow. Ask God to be with you right here and right now. - Let go of needing all the answers.
Trusting God doesn’t mean having clarity – it means having confidence in His character, even when the outcome is uncertain. - Find support.
Whether it’s a friend, a therapist, a prayer partner, or a community – don’t walk this road alone. God often gives us strength through others. - Look for strength in small things.
A kind word. A moment of calm. A smile that surprised you. These are often how God’s grace shows up in quiet, undeniable ways.
Reflection Questions
- What’s an area of your life where you’re feeling especially weak or tired right now?
- How do you usually respond when God doesn’t answer your prayers the way you hoped?
- What does it mean to you that God’s grace is enough? How does this scripture make you feel?
- Are there any false ideas you’ve believed about what strength or faith “should” look like?
- What would it look like to live each day depending on God’s strength rather than your own?
- Think of a time when God carried you through something, even if it didn’t turn out the way you expected.
- What would it take for you to fully rest in God’s power, even while the situation remains unresolved?
Affirmation
I don’t have to be strong on my own. God’s grace is carrying me. His power is at work in my weakness, and He is giving me what I need for today.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
I don’t have all the answers. I don’t know how this story ends.
But I know this: I need You.
I feel weak – mentally, physically, emotionally. And sometimes it’s hard to keep hoping when nothing seems to change.
But You see me here. You know every detail. You know how much this is costing me to keep going.
So I won’t fake strength I don’t have. I’ll lean into the strength You offer. The grace that carries. The power that lifts. The love that never gives up.
Thank You that I don’t have to figure out everything.
I just have to trust You with today. And that’s what I’m doing now.
Be my strength, Lord.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
