Encouragement to wait for God banner

Don’t Fret or Compare While Waiting For God (Psalm 37:7)

Why Patience and Trust Are Key When Life Feels Unfair.

Have you ever looked around and thought, “Why do some people who do wrong seem to get ahead, while I’m waiting and struggling?” It seems so unfair! David probably felt the same way, too.

Psalm 37 was written by King David in his later years, reflecting on a lifetime of real ups and downs – chasing after God in his youth, running for his life from his enemies, facing betrayal, and, at times, seeing people win through cheating and dishonesty.

David doesn’t sugarcoat the hard stuff. But through all those seasons, he learned that waiting on God’s timing and being still before Him is way better than getting tangled up in jealousy, worry, or taking decisions into your own hands. God sees. He’s working, even when it seems like everyone else is getting ahead and you’re stuck.

The Scripture

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices.”
Psalm 37:7 (ESV)

Breaking Down Psalm 37:7

Let’s slow down and take this in:

“Be still before the Lord…”
David starts with the opposite of stressing and striving. “Be still” means to settle your heart, quiet your mind, and stop flailing. Sometimes you need to hit pause, take a breath, and just remember that God is in control.

“…wait patiently for him;”
This isn’t the waiting we dread in long lines or traffic jams; it’s a choice to relax our timelines, trusting that God knows best. Patience here is an act of faith, declaring, “I believe God will come through at just the right time.”

“fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices.”
It’s so easy to compare and feel that life is unfair, especially when it seems like evil people get everything they want. But God reminds us: don’t let envy or worry eat away at you when it looks like others are “winning” the wrong way. Our peace isn’t rooted in what people do, but in who God is.

Faith In Action – How to Wait Patiently (And Not Worry About Others)

What does this look like for you and me?

  • Turn comparison into prayer. When you feel jealous or discouraged, talk to God about it. He can handle your honesty.
  • Find stillness every day. Create intentional moments to pause and take a step back – read a Psalm, breathe deeply, listen for God’s quiet voice.
  • Practice patience in little things. Start with the daily grind – traffic, waiting rooms, even long grocery lines. Each small victory grows your patience “muscle” for bigger waits.
  • Refuse the worry spiral. When you notice yourself getting upset about others’ success, counter it with truth: God’s justice is real. His plans for you are good.
  • Celebrate your own journey. Instead of measuring yourself against others, focus on your progress and God’s unique path for your life.

Reflection Questions

  • Where in your life is God asking you to “be still and wait patiently”, and why is it hard?
  • How do you respond when others appear to get ahead by doing the wrong thing?
  • What practical things help you find stillness and patience on busy, stressful days?
  • Can you recall a time when you rushed ahead and wished you’d waited for God? What did you learn?
  • How can you turn feelings of comparison or envy into opportunities to pray?
  • Who do you know that models patient faith, and what can you learn from them?
  • What would change in your heart and life if you truly believed God is working behind the scenes, even when you can’t see it?

Affirmation

Today, I choose to be still before God. I will wait patiently, knowing that His timing is perfect and His plan for me is good.

Closing Prayer

Father,
It’s not easy to be still when life feels unfair or slow. Teach my heart to rest in You and wait patiently for Your timing. When comparison or envy sneak in, help me trust that You see me and know what’s best. Thank You for working behind the scenes, even when I can’t see it. Fill me with contentment and peace that only comes from You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
